Thankfully, we made it through the winter and it’s finally summer once again! Long lazy days filled with sunshine are here for the next few months and so is the damage that comes with them. However, we can educate our patients on how to protect their skin while soaking up those golden rays.

Not all sunscreens are created equal. There are many notable differences, and they can make a huge impact on your patient’s outcome.

As aesthetic professionals, many of us are well-versed in the differences in these SPFs. And it’s important to educate our patients is about these distinctions. Time and time again, we’ve heard new patients tell us that no matter what they do for their brown spots, they always come back each year. Sadly, they’ve spent thousands of dollars trying to remove them, but they haven’t been given a sunscreen that actually works for preventing their return. When we see someone new, we tell them if using a medical grade sunscreen is not within their current budget, we would rather them delay the treatment a few weeks, save the money, and purchase a product that will work to protect their long-term investment. It’s just that important.

Chemical vs Physical Block
On the market today are two very different sunscreens. Chemical SPFs absorb the sun’s rays, while physical blocks reflect them.

According to the MD Anderson Cancer Center, people often choose the less effective chemical sunscreen due to ease of application. Types of chemical sunscreens include oxybenzone, octinoxate, cinoxate, dioxybenzone, ensulizole, homosalate, meradimate, octisalate, octocrylene, padimate O, sulisobenzone, and avobenzone. In recent years, they have flagged many of these chemicals as having hormone disrupting properties. They are also not ideal for wildlife and the environment.

Physical blocks Zinc and Titanium Dioxide are the most effective barrier to the sun but they are often overlooked because of their chalky white residue. However, that faint white tint can actually be helpful for signaling when it’s time to reapply. Unlike chemicals, mineral SPFs containing iron oxide can shield the skin from damaging blue light too, making them an ideal choice for anyone who’s on a phone, computer or tablet each day.

Chemical sunscreens can require up to 20 minutes to be effective, however, Mineral SPF is effective immediately. Minerals are also reef safe, making them a much better choice for marine life and the environment. They are also a better choice for sensitive skin, especially for those suffering with psoriasis, eczema, and rosacea.
